The Samyang AF 18mm f/2.8 FE is a very compact and lightweight ultra wide-angle lens for Sony E / FE mount. With a 100-degree diagonal angle of view (on a full-frame camera), it is ideal for photographing sweeping views, dramatic coastal landscapes, architecture, cities with bustling squares and narrow alleys – or why not cool close-ups of action scenes and sports. The lens can focus as close as 25 cm!
Excellent for travel
Although Samyang’s new wide-angle lens is designed to cover the full-frame format, it can also be used on Sony’s A6xxx series cameras that have the smaller APS-C sensor. There it gets a more all-round wide-angle character (corresponding to 28mm for full-frame) that works nicely for subjects such as group photos, travel and street photography.
With a weight of only 145 grams, the Samyang AF 18mm f/2.8 FE is also one of the market’s lightest full-frame lenses in this focal class. In other words, an excellent choice for photographers who want to travel with the smallest possible equipment without sacrificing functionality or image quality.
Fast, sharp and quiet
A linear STM motor powers the autofocus in the Samyang AF 18mm f/2.8 FE and it manages to set focus both fast and quiet, appreciated not least for video filming. Even though a compact format has been prioritized, the lens makes no sacrifices in image quality. The optical design of the Samyang AF 18mm f/2.8 FE consists of 9 elements mounted in 8 groups. Among these are 3 aspherical elements that ensure low distortion and maximum corner to corner sharpness at all apertures, 2 elements of HR glass (High Refractive) and 3 elements of ED glass (Extra low Dispersion) that counteract coma and chromatic aberration (color bleeding).
An advanced anti-reflective Ultra Multilayer Coating (UMC) is used to prevent the occurrence of stray light and ensures that the images show high contrast and brilliance even in difficult lighting conditions.
