The Tilta SW-T030 focus whip transfers rotation to the hand wheel of a follow focus from 300 mm away. The focus puller does not have to stand right at the camera — in a cramped space, on a crane or wherever they would be in the operator’s way at the wheel, they pull focus at the end of the flexible shaft. ABS plastic and stainless steel body in black; the same whip is included in the Tilta FF-T03, FF-T04 and FF-T05 follow focus kits, this one is sold on its own.
The Tilta 300mm Follow Focus Whip is the focus whip for the Tilta follow focus. The 300 mm flexible shaft moves the control away from the unit and transfers rotation even when the focus puller is off the wheel’s axis.
Pulling focus from a distance
In a cramped space, with the camera on a crane or in a shot where a focus puller standing at the wheel would be in the operator’s way, focus is pulled from a distance: the whip attaches to the follow focus and the focus puller turns its end 300 mm from the unit. The flexible shaft transfers rotation even at an angle, so the control end can point sideways or upwards, wherever it is comfortable for the hand.
Body and use
The shaft is ABS plastic and stainless steel in a black finish, and 300 mm is the compromise between reach and stiffness — long enough to stand clear of the camera, stiff enough that the rotation does not lag. The same whip is included in the Tilta FF-T03, FF-T04 and FF-T05 follow focus kits; this one is sold on its own as a replacement or a second whip for the kit.
Tilta follow focus
A follow focus is mechanical focusing for a camera on rods: the gear meshes with the lens gear ring and the focus puller turns the hand wheel with its marking disk. Tilta makes a range of parts for it that combine across units — the speed crank for long focus pulls, the focus whip for pulling from a distance, interchangeable 0.5/0.6/0.8 MOD gears, gear rings for photographic lenses and dry-erase marking disks. This part is one of them.
