Mini LED Lights for Video: What to Check Before You Buy

A mini LED light can fix a dark face, add a soft eye light or give a rim of colour. It cannot light a whole room. Pick one by three numbers: lux at a stated distance, colour accuracy (CRI and TLCI) and runtime at full power. Ignore the watt label on its own.

Here is the short version for a quick choice.

Your job What to look for Models we stock
Phone vlog or call Under 100 g, magnetic mount, CRI 95+ amaran Go
Camera-top light for interviews 25 W, bi-colour, quick-release mount amaran Ace 25x or Ace 25c
Strongest pocket fill or rim light 40 W, 40 to 55 minutes at full power Zhiyun Fiveray M40, SmallRig RM 40C
Narrow beam for a face or product Focusable lens, daylight colour SmallRig RF 20C

What a mini LED light does well, and where it stops

A mini light is a small source. That makes it hard-edged unless you put it close or add diffusion. It is great as a fill, a hair light, a practical in the background or a quick fix on a run-and-gun shoot.

It is the wrong tool when you must light a wide room, balance a sunny window or fill a big softbox. For that, look at LED panels or spot lights. If you are unsure how many lights a scene needs, our guide on how many lights you need for video helps you decide.

The four specs that matter

1. Lux at a stated distance, not watts

Watts tell you how much power the light draws. They do not tell you how much light reaches the face. Two lights with the same watt label can differ a lot once you add lenses, diffusion and heat limits.

Ask for lux at a set distance and colour temperature. For example, the amaran Ace 25x lists up to 6,320 lux at 0.5 m (5,600 K) in Boost Mode, where output rises from 25 W to 32 W. The Zhiyun Fiveray M20 lists a peak of 2,010 lux at 0.5 m (4,300 K). Both numbers use 0.5 m, so you can compare them. A figure with no distance is not comparable.

2. Colour accuracy: CRI and TLCI

CRI (Colour Rendering Index) says how natural colours look under a light. TLCI (Television Lighting Consistency Index) was made by the European Broadcasting Union to judge how a light looks through a camera. Both run from 0 to 100. The EBU notes in recommendation R 137 that 100 means a perfect match to the reference source.

What should you aim for? German broadcaster guidance from ARD says a TLCI above 85 is recommended for broadcast studios. Several lights below list 95 or more. For example, the amaran Ace 25x lists CRI 95+ and TLCI 95+, and the Zhiyun Fiveray M40 lists CRI 96 and TLCI 97.

One more check for skin tones. Japan’s NHK research recommends Ra of 90 or more and R9 (saturated red) of 80 or more for white LED lighting in UHDTV production. See the NHK study. Check whether the maker publishes R9. A high CRI is a good sign, not a promise.

3. Runtime at full power

Runtime claims depend on the brightness level. Always read the number for 100% output.

  • amaran Ace 25x: up to 4 hours 40 minutes in Silent Mode (output drops to 6.5 W), or 70 minutes in Standard Mode.
  • SmallRig RM 40C: 55 minutes at full 40 W.
  • Zhiyun Fiveray M20: 40 minutes at 20 W, 1 hour 20 minutes at 10 W, 3 hours at 5 W.
  • amaran Go: 1 hour 21 minutes at 100%, up to 8 hours 50 minutes at 10%.

So a “4 hour” light may give you a quarter of that brightness for four hours. Plan for a power bank or a second light on long days. The M20, for instance, can charge from a PD power bank while it lights.

Heat also limits output. As an example, the SmallRig RC 60B manual says output falls to 80%, 65% and 50% as the battery reaches 62, 63 and 64 °C. Small bodies get hot, so do not count on full power for the whole session.

4. Colour temperature range and mount

Bi-colour lights (like the Ace 25x, 2,700 to 6,500 K) let you match a warm lamp or cool daylight. RGBWW models add full colour for effects. A daylight-only light, such as the SmallRig RF 20C at 5,600 K ±400 K, is simpler but only fits when your scene is daylight-balanced. Our guide on colour temperature for video lighting shows how to match light to a scene.

Then check the mount. A cold shoe or 1/4″-20 thread is standard. The amaran Ace series also has a quick-release Ace Lock mount, which clips on and off in about a second.

A worked example: how far can you place it?

Light falls fast with distance. The inverse-square law says illuminance equals intensity divided by distance squared. Double the distance and you get one quarter of the light. The Illuminating Engineering Society defines the law and notes that for a small source it is accurate within 1% when you are at least five times the source’s largest dimension away.

Take the Ace 25x at 6,320 lux at 0.5 m (Boost Mode, 5,600 K). Our estimate with the law:

Distance Estimated lux Change from 0.5 m
0.5 m 6,320 –
1 m about 1,580 one quarter
2 m about 395 one sixteenth

A pocket light that looks strong at arm’s length gives a modest key light at 2 m. This is why mini lights suit close, talking-head shots. It also gives you a rule: if your light is 2 m from the subject, move it to 1 m and you get four times more light, which is two stops.

Which mini light fits which job

Phone and desk vlogs

The amaran Go weighs 85 g and attaches to MagSafe and Qi2 phones with a magnet. It lists CRI 95+, TLCI 99 and 2,700 to 6,500 K. Output is soft, up to 235 lux at 0.5 m. It suits close selfie video and calls. It is too weak for anything beyond arm’s length. The price is €29 (€35.96 with VAT).

Camera-top light for interviews and events

For a light you leave on the camera, we suggest the amaran Ace 25x. It gives 25 W (32 W in Boost), a bi-colour range and a lux figure that is stated at a clear distance. Choose the Ace 25c if you want full-colour effects. The kit versions add a light control grid and a mini tripod. At the time of writing the Ace 25x costs €69 (€85.56 with VAT).

Be honest about the limit: on-camera light is flat because it sits next to the lens. Use it as fill, and put a stronger light off to the side when you can. Our on-camera light guide goes deeper on this.

Rim lights and backgrounds

When you need punch from a small body, the 40 W class is the top end of “mini”. The Zhiyun Fiveray M40 costs €94.54 (€117.23 with VAT) and the SmallRig RM 40C costs €87.92 (€109.02 with VAT). The RM 40C runs 55 minutes at full power. Both fit on a small stand behind the subject to add a rim of light or colour. Our guide to background lighting for video shows four ways to use them.

A narrow beam for faces and products

The SmallRig RF 20C has a push-pull lens that sets the beam from 24° to 60°. It lists 20 W, CRI Ra of 97 or more and about 1.5 hours at full power. It weighs 520 g, so it is heavier than the others. It is daylight only, so pick it when your scene is daylight-balanced. The price is €83.92 (€104.06 with VAT).

Common mistakes

  • Buying by watts. Check lux at a distance instead.
  • Mixing colour temperatures. A 3,200 K lamp and a 5,600 K light on the same face looks messy. Set the mini light to match the room.
  • Using it as the only light. A single small source gives hard shadows. Add diffusion or a bigger light. See three-point lighting for video.
  • Ignoring power. Count runtime at 100%, not the best-case number.
  • Shooting a livestream with one light. For streams, read our lighting guide for live streaming.

Key Takeaways

  • A mini LED light is best as fill, rim or accent light, not as the main source for a room.
  • Compare lux at the same distance, plus CRI and TLCI, and ignore watts alone.
  • Read runtime at full power. A pocket light may run only 55 to 70 minutes at full power and much longer only at low output.
  • By the inverse-square law, doubling the distance leaves a quarter of the light. Keep the light close.
  • For most camera-top work, start with the amaran Ace 25x. For phones, choose the amaran Go. For a stronger rim light, choose a 40 W model.
